How We Built the NOXE Formula

Six months, four sample rounds and one ingredient we cut at the last minute.

NOXE did not start as a company. It started with three college athletes annoyed at the same problem: every hydration product on the shelf was built for somebody else.

We set one constraint at the start. Dose all five electrolytes that leave your body in sweat, at levels set for real training rather than a general consumer market. Six months of sample rounds, supplier calls and arguments over a stick pack followed from that single constraint.

Round one: the ratio

Our first sample used a 1:1 sodium to potassium ratio, the default for most consumer electrolyte products. It tasted flat, and it did not match what the research on athletic sweat loss supports. We moved to roughly 2.4:1 in round two, and that ratio held through every round after.

Rounds two and three: the magnesium problem

Our first two magnesium sources were oxide forms, because oxide is cheap to manufacture and lets a brand print a bigger milligram number on the label. It also absorbs poorly and sits hard on the stomach, the last thing you want before training. We switched to magnesium citrate in round three. It costs more per unit and the label number looks smaller for the same practical dose, but it is the form your body can use.

The ingredient we cut

Round three also included a proprietary blend of adaptogens our co-packer suggested to differentiate the product on shelf. We tested it. We liked how it tested. We cut it two weeks before locking the formula, because it lacked evidence strong enough to justify a place in the stick, and every ingredient in NOXE has to earn its place.

Round four: flavor, and the part you cannot solve

The last round covered flavor: citrus, lemon lime, sweetened with stevia leaf and monk fruit instead of sugar. You will still taste the salt. That is 730mg of sodium doing its job, and no amount of flavor work makes it disappear. We stopped trying to mask it and started explaining why it is there.

The formula on the label today is what shipped: five electrolytes in citrate forms, zero sugar, zero caffeine, nothing that failed to earn its place.
